A land of more than a billion people

India is the largest democracy in the world. With over a billion people, India is second only to China in population. It is estimated that by 2015 India will become the largest nation in the world.

A land of 333 million gods

Anyone who is familiar with India knows that India has always been a challenge to the Gospel. Hinduism that teaches, "just as all rivers lead to the ocean, all religions lead to God", dominates the thinking of the masses. In Hinduism there are more than 333 million gods and goddesses. Many Hindus revere Jesus as another god. Yet their eyes are blinded to the uniqueness of Christ. His words: "I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me," does not make sense to them.

A land of 1,652 languages
India is virtually a "Babel" when it comes to languages. There are 1,652 languages in use in this land. Of these 222 are considered "major" languages spoken by a minimum of 100,000 people. Millions speak languages such as Bhojpuri, Maithili, Maghi, and Harianwi. Yet the Holy Bible is not yet translated into these languages.

A land of 4,635 'people groups'

India is made up of thousands of different people groups or ethnic groups. (The Indian word is "jathi"). Jesus commanded us to make disciples from every "people group" or "nation". See Matthew 24:14; 28:19 and 20; Revelation 5:9 and 10; 6:9 and 10. Yet thousands of the ethnic groups in India have no believers among them. Most of the unreached people groups of the world live in India.

Christians: A tiny minority in two pockets

The Christian population in India, according to the government figures is only 2.3% of the population. Even if we follow the optimistic figures given by Christian leaders, it is only 4%. Of these 80% are found in the southern three states and in a few of the small states in northeast.

Doors for foreign missionaries closed
The government of India decided to close its doors for foreign missionaries back in 1975. Since then the government has given very few new missionary visas. Moreover, they have been systematically expelling missionaries from India. Today there are very few foreign missionaries left in India. The few that are present cannot actively take part in evangelism.

How can we reach such a complex nation with the Gospel?

My Testimony [Prakash]

I was born in the year 1971 in the village called motebennur,I was born to parents who were very poor.And we were 12 children in all.Since my parents could not take care of me they sold me to somebody,when I was 6 months old child.And since then I was sold or given away to someone or the other in the year 1980 I remember sleeping in the Railway station and Bus stands,Going around without any food,water, shelter,clothing ect.

There was nobody to help me.Sometime I even begged for food.I was also put in creche at a young age and thrown out later.Through somebody whom.I dont even know,I was educated.I finshed my 10th grade in the year 1990 i grow up very depressed, discourege, without a meaning in life.There was absolutely no hope for me there was nothing to achive.And at this stage there was no job at hand, neither any resources.at such a situation a friend of mine took me to an evangelist meeting to Hubli and there God touched me.God filled me with His unmeareble love.I wept very bitterly,all of a sudden,I felt so ligh,all my past hurts, bitterness,and depression vanished away in a fraction of a secound I felt such a comfort that day I gave my life to Jesus and accepted Him as personal saviour it was the 1994,and since then I have been living with a new hope.A hope that one day I will spend eternity with this Jesus who saved me from the clutches of this dark and wicked world.
Later an in 1995 I heard the call of God for the full time ministry,so I resingned my job,and until now I have been serving God by faith.

News Reports from India: Death Toll Rising In Orissa Refugee Camps; Violence Spreading

NEW DELHI, INDIA (BosNewsLife)-- An elderly pastor in India's Orissa state, who fled the deadliest Hindu-violence against Indian Christians there in recent memory, has died in a government-run refugee camp, a well-informed rights group confirmed Tuesday, January 22.

"Pastor Hari Digal from Baliguda refugee camp died," late Monday, January 21, said the Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC), which represents churches and missionaries. Digal was the second believer known to have died in as many days in one of the apparently overcrowded and unhygienic Orissa refugee camps.

Relief workers have complained that local authorities have not given enough access to the Christian refugees in Orissa, where at least 5,000 Christians are believed to have been impacted by the crisis. On Saturday, January 19, a 60-year-old devoted Christian, Kajuru Digal, whose house was destroyed in the violence, died in the Barakhama refugee camp apparently "because of unhygienic conditions in there," GCIC President Sajan K. George told BosNewsLife.

Pastor Digal had a similar experience, according to GCIC investigators. "Hari Digal was living like a destitute after his house and church were destroyed by Hindu radicals," on December 26, the GCIC said in a statement. "He died with a broken heart from the trauma and agony inflicted on him by the radical Hindus," the GCIC said, adding that he leaves behind a son, Naresh Digal, who is also a pastor. "The persons who destroyed his life are still at large, challenging the constitution and rules of democracy," the organization complained.

NINE KILLED

Besides the two Christian refugees, some nine Christians have died in the recent Orissa violence, which broke out on Christmas eve, December 24, and lasted till early January, in several areas of the state, churches and rights groups say. Over 70 churches and other Christian institutions as well as hundreds of Christian homes were destroyed by Hindu-hardliners and activists of Hindu groups opposed to the spread of Christianity in India, investigators said.

Despite the tensions, up to 10,000 people managed to march to the Orissa State Assembly building in the state capital Bhubaneswar to protest the attacks on Christians and demand justice for victims, one of the organizers, the All India Christian Council (AICC) told BosNewsLife. Thousands of security forces have however been deployed in the troubled state, where first church services resumed around New Year.

Clashes in Orissa also spread to other states, including neighboring Chhattisgarh, some 80 Christians were injured when up to 100 Hindu militants armed with sticks and petrol (gasoline) bombs attacked a prayer meeting led by Pastor Mohan C Thomas and Jose Kajur in Bothli village of in the Durg district, said the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI).

"FORCEFUL CONVERSION"

"The innocent Christians and Christian workers were targeted" Wednesday, January 16, "on the pretext of forceful conversion," said EFI, an umbrella group of evangelical Christians, churches and organizations. "In 10 minutes of the brutal attack, the attackers beat them mercilessly and burnt down the huge tent where they were assembled."

The violence was followed by an attack on a Christian health camp run by missionaries Thursday, January 17, in Dhamtari district, injuring at least a dozen Christians, local believers said. Activists of Hindu organization Dharamsena allegedly reportedly attacked the camp, while some 500 people gathered there apparently for treatment and worship.

Copycat attacks have also continued elsewhere in India, including in Madhya Pradesh state’s Rewa district where two Christian missionaries were kidnapped early Thursday, January 17, before being released the next day after being beaten by Hindu militants in the jungle, the GCIC and other sources said.

HOUSE CHURCH

Activists of the hard-line Hindu Bajrang Dal group allegedly abducted Vijaya Kumar Maurya and Keera Lal of the indigenous Christian organization Gospel Echo Mission Society after attacking a house church meeting attended by the two men. The activists, arriving on motorbikes, "attacked with swords, sticks, knives and other instruments," the GCIC said, adding that two believers were "critically injured" and underwent treatment in a local hospital.

The activists later allegedly also planned to "sacrifice" the two missionaries they abducted to a Hindu god on nearby mountain Sahaki Pahar. They were reportedly prevented from killing them, after receiving a mobile phone call, warning that a police complaint had been lodged.

The GCIC and other rights groups have urged the Indian government to end the violence against Christians in this mainly Hindu nation, saying 2007 was the deadliest year for the Christian minority since the country gained independence in 1947.

    Thank your for your email. Oddly enough (or not so odd :) I was about to send you one. As far as the donation, I feel very humbled and blessed already. I have a need to give, but want to give where it really matters. Sometimes it makes me feel sick in my spirit the way we Americans have been truly blessed by God and it never seems to be enough. Sometimes I have felt the same way about myself. Anyway, without really praying about it or anything, when I saw your website, I knew that the Leper Colony Church was the place for me to give. I have a son, 31 years of age, that is profoundly mentally retarded with autism and I guess in some way, I can relate to the leper people. I suppose I have a better understanding of being shunned by the world than a lot of folks, of the pain of alienation, of looking and being different, the feelings of rejection. I love the leper people already. I read every single email sent and looked closely at every picture. My only wish is that I had more money to send. However, I have already committed in my heart to send as much and as often as I can. You do a good work and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your compassion.     Thanks for the pictures of the guys (and girls :)...I really appreciate what Pastor Prakash is doing there. I told my mother about his calling and she wanted to give what she could. It's truly the widow's mite. I'm very fortunate to have a mother that cares about all of God's children. Anyway, I am sending it your way after this email. Thank you for what you are doing too. My best to you and yours. I am so thankful to believe in such a superior God.
    Do you mind if I continue using your website to donate to the Leper Colony Church? If for some reason it's better that I don't, that's fine, otherwise it just seems easier to use yours than sending it directly to them. Please let me know. Unless or until God shows me different, I'm in this for the long haul. Never have I seen such a sweet and humble bunch. All that matters to me is that I can help meet their needs as God provides. Thanks for the forward.  I think of the Leper people a lot...sometimes it's hard to express how thankful I am to believe in a God that loves mercy and kindness.  Every time I read what Pastor Prakash  does on a daily basis humbles me.  I wonder sometimes if all God is truly ever looking for is a pure heart.  I see a  pure heart in Pastor Prakash and a most true one in you.   It's just very refreshing to me. Praise the Lord.By the grace of God here we all doing fine and ministry going well.Coming month by faith I am starting orphanage for leper colony children.God is my pravaider.I belive that God will open the door for this.As you know leper people are very very poor and they can not give education for thier children and most of children go for begging with thier parenes.many children dont have food and shelter.Children parence requiesting me to give education and shelter and food.As you know we have children ministry in leper colony.In that colony there are 60 childrens,among 60 children 17 children came forward to go school.Praise God.Children are growing well.If we start orphanage we put them in government school.In goverment school children will get ofternoon food and books.We have to pravaide them morning brackfast and evening food and shelter.Next month June 1st school admisition will start and I am paying 17 childrens school feez.Brother Moses you have sent me 16378 in that money I have saved some money for to pay children school feez.Here in village people are coming forward to give thier life to Jesus.God is moving among us.Here bro,Luther and Sundhar and Bro,Martin and Parmeshappa sister Nirmal doing well.Here my wife Poonam doing well.Please give my regards to all.In leper colony another 2 families came to the Lord.Praise God for these souls.Brother Moses and GIGI we love you all.Thanks for your prayers and regular support.Please greet sister Susie.

Dear Orin,

I hope this finds you well. I need prayer for myself and my son Justin.  Justin is autistic and profoundly mentally retarded and lives in a state home called Hudspeth Mental Retardation Center in Jackson, MS.  There have been abuse issues in the past, but yesterday was especially bad.  Someone literally abused him causing bleeding and bruising.  It is being investigated, but I have little trust in the system. I need help.  My son needs help. Every "client" out there needs help, because whoever would do such a cruel act would do it to anyone. Please, as the Lord would give you unction, pray for us.

I thank you so much for remembering us in your prayers, it is very helpful.  Just to know that there are folks out there that care means the world.  I am so glad that you were able to see your sister.  Family is very important.  I haven't heard back (yet) about the ongoing investigation, but will keep you posted.  I know that the red tape takes time, meanwhile, Justin is here with me.  I keep you and yours in my thoughts and pray for you also.  Concerning finances, I too can understand that.  I have been unemployed for a while now which has allowed me to have my son with me three to fours days a week, but have been looking at the job ads.  The rising cost of oil affects many in the pocketbook, but as long as I have the ability, I will continue to support the Leper Colony Church.  It's a tremendous blessing to do so.
